An independent shop on West Warren

Instant Auto Repair works out of one building at 20142 W Warren Ave in the Warrendale neighbourhood of west Detroit. There is no second location and no head office. The people who quote your repair are the people who do it.

Most of what comes through the door is the work other places would rather not take on: engine and timing jobs, transmissions, and electrical faults that have already been to two shops. Those are the jobs where diagnosis is most of the value, and where guessing costs a customer the most money.

How we work

ASE-certified technicians
The people opening your hood hold National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence certification. That is a proctored exam plus two years of hands-on experience, retested every five years.
Payment plans on bigger repairs
A transmission or an engine job does not always land on a good week. We set up payment arrangements so the car gets fixed now and the bill gets spread out.
You approve the price before we start
We diagnose, we call you with a number and what it covers, and nothing gets turned until you say go. No surprise line items at pickup.

What ASE certification actually is

The National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence runs proctored exams by speciality: engine repair, electrical systems, brakes, suspension and steering, and so on. Passing one is not enough on its own. A technician also needs two years of documented hands-on experience before the certification is issued.

Certifications expire after five years and have to be re-earned by taking the test again, which is the part that matters. Cars change, and a credential from 2009 that never had to be renewed would tell you very little about who is working on a vehicle built last year.

Why we diagnose first

A trouble code names the circuit that reported a fault. It does not name the part that failed. The gap between those two things is where most wasted money in car ownership lives, because the code frequently shares a name with a component and people buy that component.

Testing the circuit costs an hour. Guessing costs the price of a part that cannot be returned once fitted, and then the price of the next guess. We would rather charge for the hour and be right.
