Suspension and Steering Repair in Detroit

Suspension wear shows up as noise, uneven tyre wear and a car that wanders, and on Detroit roads it happens sooner than the mileage suggests. Potholes hammer struts, bend control arms and split bushings, and one worn joint changes the alignment enough to scrub the edge off a tyre in a few thousand miles. We put the car on the lift and check every joint and bushing by hand before recommending anything, because a clunk can be a sway bar link costing very little or a ball joint that is a safety issue.

4.5from 58 Google reviews

Read them on Google rather than taking our word for it.

  • A clunk or rattle over bumps and expansion joints
  • The car keeps bouncing after a dip in the road
  • Tyres wearing on one edge only
  • The steering wheel off centre when driving straight
  • The car pulling to one side or wandering at highway speed
  • A nose dive under braking, or the rear squatting under throttle

What we actually do on this job

  • Full lift inspection of ball joints, tie rods, bushings and links
  • Strut and shock testing for leak and rebound
  • Wheel bearing and CV joint check while it is up
  • Alignment after any steering or suspension component is replaced
  • A ranked list of what is a safety issue now and what can wait

Turnaround. Most suspension work is same day or next day.

What the price depends on

We do not publish a flat price for this, because a number quoted before anyone has looked at the car is a guess. You get a real one after the diagnosis, and you approve it before any work starts.

  • How many components are worn, since they tend to go in groups
  • Whether it is a loaded strut assembly or a bare strut and spring
  • Rust seizure on Michigan cars, which turns a bolt into a cutting job
  • Whether the vehicle has air suspension or electronic dampers
  • Alignment required afterwards, which most steering work needs

Suspension & Steering questions

What people ask us about suspension & steering

How do I know if I need struts or shocks?

If the car keeps bouncing after you push down on a corner and let go, or it dives hard under braking and floats over dips, the dampers are worn. A visible oily film running down the strut body means it has lost its fluid and is finished. Struts are structural and also locate the wheel, shocks only damp, so which one you have depends on the vehicle.

Is a clunking noise over bumps dangerous?

It depends entirely on which part is clunking. A worn sway bar link is noisy and cheap. A worn ball joint or a cracked control arm can separate and drop the wheel, which is a genuine safety failure. They sound similar from the driver's seat, which is why the car goes on the lift before we tell you it is fine.

Do I need an alignment after suspension work?

After anything that changes the steering geometry, yes. Replacing tie rods, control arms, struts or ball joints all move the alignment out of spec. Skipping it means the new parts get worn out along with a set of tyres. We quote the alignment as part of the job so it is not a surprise.

I hit a pothole and now the car pulls. What happened?

A hard pothole hit can bend a control arm or a wheel, knock the alignment out, or damage a strut internally. A pull that started right after an impact is worth checking quickly, because a bent component keeps chewing the tyre the whole time you drive on it. Bring it in and we will put it on the rack.
