Exhaust and Muffler Repair in Detroit

Most loud exhausts on Michigan cars are a rusted-through section or a broken flex pipe, and the fix is a section and a weld rather than a whole new system. Road salt attacks the underside of a car from below for five months a year, and the exhaust is the first thing to go because it heats and cools constantly. We put it on the lift, find where the leak actually is, and quote replacing only what has failed.

4.5from 58 Google reviews

Read them on Google rather than taking our word for it.

  • The car suddenly got loud, especially on acceleration
  • A rattle underneath that sounds like a can of bolts
  • Exhaust smell getting into the cabin
  • A hiss or a puff you can hear at idle
  • Check engine light with a catalyst efficiency code
  • The car failed inspection for emissions

What we actually do on this job

  • Lift inspection along the full length of the system
  • Leak location with the engine running, not guesswork
  • Pipe, flex pipe, muffler and resonator replacement and welding
  • Hanger and clamp replacement so the new work does not sag
  • Catalytic converter testing before recommending one

Turnaround. Most exhaust work is done the same day.

What the price depends on

We do not publish a flat price for this, because a number quoted before anyone has looked at the car is a guess. You get a real one after the diagnosis, and you approve it before any work starts.

  • How many sections have rusted through versus one bad joint
  • Whether the catalytic converter is involved, which is the expensive part
  • Direct-fit parts versus fabricating and welding a section
  • Rusted bolts and hangers that have to be cut off
  • Whether the car needs to pass an emissions retest

Exhaust & Muffler questions

What people ask us about exhaust & muffler

Do I need a whole new exhaust system?

Rarely. Exhaust systems fail in sections, and on a rusty car the failure is usually at a joint, a flex pipe or the muffler inlet. Replacing the failed section and welding it in properly is a fraction of the cost of a full system, and it lasts. We will tell you if the rest of it is genuinely too far gone to weld to.

Can you just weld my exhaust instead of replacing parts?

Where there is enough good metal to weld to, yes, and that is often the right call. Where the pipe has gone thin and papery from rust, a weld will simply tear out again next to the repair. We check what the metal is doing before deciding, and we tell you which one you are getting.

My catalytic converter code came back. Do I need a new converter?

Not necessarily. A P0420 catalyst efficiency code can come from an exhaust leak upstream, a lazy oxygen sensor or an engine running rich, all of which are cheaper than a converter. Replacing the converter without fixing the underlying cause means the new one fails too. We test before recommending one.
