Why does my A/C stop blowing cold every summer?
Because there is a slow leak that has never been fixed. Refrigerant is a sealed loop and is not consumed, so if the level drops every year, it is escaping. Common spots are the condenser at the front of the car where road debris hits it, the compressor shaft seal, and the O-rings at the line connections. Finding the leak costs less over two summers than recharging it twice.
Is a can of A/C recharge from the parts store a bad idea?
Usually yes. Those cans have no way to measure how much is already in the system, and an overcharged system cools worse than an undercharged one and can damage the compressor. Many also contain sealer, which contaminates recovery equipment and means the next shop has to charge more to work on it.
My heat only works when the car is moving. What is that?
That usually means the coolant is not flowing well through the heater core, either from a partial blockage or from low coolant level. It can also be a thermostat stuck open, so the engine never reaches temperature. Both are worth fixing before a Michigan winter, and low coolant is a symptom worth chasing on its own.
